By all rights, Paranormal Activity 2 is better than the first. It has more characters, more interesting characters, better camera work, cooler effects, even better sound design and a bigger, more impressive story. But somehow, just doesn’t measure up to the visceral experience of watching the first one. We’ve already had this experience and it was called Paranormal Activity. That doesn’t mean we didn’t jump out of our seats and lose some popcorn watching this bad boy. It packs a spook.

As a film and as an adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling tween romance novels, Eclipse’s director, David Slade, most certainly out-did either of his predecessors. While the love story remains intact to satisfy Nat’s need for any angsty werewolf/vampire/human love triangle, Matt appreciated the clear effort taken to attract a male audience by adding a dark and more violent visual style, that was clearly riffing on actual horror elements for the first time in the series.

Once Wes Craven’s monster managed to get seven movies in a decade, it seemed pretty obvious that Freddy was feeling the franchise fatigue… not a even a bout with Jason Voorhees could get him back in the limelight with his own solo movie. Until the Hollywood cure-all was applied to Craven’s dream demon: reboot!

So now, Watchmen’s Jackie Earle Haley dons Englund’s signature fedora, claws and stylish Christmas sweater to terrorize the dreams of the sexy teenagers of Elm Street in a rehash of Freddy’s origin story. The only problem is that this Nightmare reboot seems more pre-occupied with being a shot-for-shot remake of Wes Craven’s original than it is at just being a good scary movie. The result is a bit bland, leaving us wondering if this movie is made for people who LOVE the original so much they’ll watch any Freddy? Or is it for people who have no idea how scary Freddy should be?

Let’s preface this review with the fact that Matt is quite possibly one of the biggest werewolf aficionado’s on the planet, having watched any and every lycanthropic-film in the last hundred years. And nothing but nothing compares to The Wolf-Man. Except, of course, The Wolfman. Faithful in all the right ways, and yet unafraid to weave a more complex storyline with more extreme Werewolf rampages, an even more foreign origin story, and an ending that will knock your socks off. Yes, that’s right, there’s a new Wolfman in Blackmoor, Chaney, and he can howl with the best of them.

Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg look like they make an incredible comedic duo in Ruben Fleischer’s directorial debut, Zombieland, but there’s a delicate balance to ride between that comedy and the horror elements that makes Zombie movies really knock it out of the park. We’re both easily as excited about this one as we were about any summer movies that came our way, whether that’s because Matt loves him some Sam Raimi-style horror/comedy or because Nat has an abnormally active imagination when it comes to surviving a Zombie pandemic, you can bet we’ll be inline for the midnight screening!
