AVATAR REVIEW: Ho…Lee…Frak…

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

James Cameron definitely made the most of nearly 15 years and 300 Million dollars making Avatar, because it looks and feels completely unlike any movie ever. Maybe it’s the tasteful use of 3D technology, maybe the striking resemblance the CG characters have to their human actor equivalents, or maybe it was the fact that an entirely computer generated world actually felt REAL for the first time ever, but Avatar definitely knocked us both out… what about you?

ASTRO BOY REVIEW: Onward and Upward

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

After having our hopes for a good Japanese cartoon adaptation dashed by the Wachowski’s Speed Racer, our hopes were high for Imagi Studios to bring us some good old-fashioned CGI manga true to the original. And bring it they did. In the form of a very well made kids movie that brought us both back to the early 80’s. And treated us like we had the same brainpower we had in the 80’s. A childrens’ movie 100%, Astro Boy fires on all cylinders for kids, and gives parents a good excuse to watch a cartoon inspired by their own childhood. So if you don’t have any, go borrow some kids from someone you know, and you’ll look right at home in the theatre!

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE REVIEW: Let The Wild Rumpus Start!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

We both had very mixed about Wild Things. But even with Nat not finding anything to sympathize with in the character of Max, and Matt finding the narrative run out of steam halfway through, we still couldn’t find it in our hearts to dislike this movie. It’s just somehow very special in spite of any faults is may have. Between the gorgeous effects work, incredible voice talent and breathtaking cinematography of a world we’ve never really seen before, Jonze did manage to capture something with this movie. That something just wasn’t a perfect film.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY REVIEW: Most Terrifying Film Ever?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

When a $15,000 indie film rakes in $7.1-million by being called the most terrifying film in years, it definitely gets our attention. So when Paranormal Activity had an exclusive screening in Toronto, we made sure we had tickets! And sure enough, we were treated to more than just horror… we got true terror. We review it spoiler free at first, so take an advanced look at what might be the scariest thing you’ll ever see!

ZOMBIELAND REVIEW: Moist. VERY Moist.

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Columbus wasn’t kidding when he said Zombieland is moist, but we enjoyed the hell out of Ruben Fleischer’s debut ride! Between Jesse Eisenberg’s coy hero and Woody Harrelson’s crass maverick, we got our fill of every kind of Zombie kill you can imagine. And that’s not even considering the monster awesome cameo in the middle. But what did YOU think of your adventure through Zombieland?

SURROGATES REVIEW: Where’s Steeplejack?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Did Bruce Willis and Jonathan Mostow do justice to the critically acclaimed five-part comic written by Robert Venditti? You already know from the trailers that the stakes have gone up from the comic plot: now the operators die as well when the surrogates are fried. But did that ruin the entire motivation of “Steeplejack”? Or does this change in the plot give a whole new and higher message to Surrogates? Check out our review, it’s Spoiler-free at first and then quite Spoileriffic as we examine Surrogates as a standalone film, and then as an adaptation.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS REVIEW: Quentin’s Finest?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Maybe it’s because Matt is such a Spaghetti Western fan. Maybe it’s because Nat was so taken by Christoph Waltz deliciously evil performance. Maybe it’s simply the incredible 2.5 hours of brilliant film making. But one way or another, we both loved Basterds more than any other Tarantino we’ve ever seen. The Midnight Screening was completely packed, and the crowd was into every word. What about you? We hope you get a kick out of our review, but what did you think of Inglourious Basterds?

DISTRICT 9 REVIEW: The Best of The Summer

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp have brought us what might be the most significant modern Sci-Fi movie, but have definitely made one of the best movies of 2009. With great characters, an amazing alternate reality, plus social commentary and action to spare, District 9 is a must-see film for geeks and movie-lovers alike!
