WALKING DEAD REVIEW: Mini-Series/Season 1

It’s not a movie per se, but with six episodes in Darabont’s mini-series based on Robert Kirkman’s comics, AMC’s Walking Dead is definitely geeky enough to warrant a thread for us all to chat about it!

And once the DVD comes out in the Spring, we’ll be giving it a Matt + Nat review just like we would for any geeky/genre/comicbook movie!

  1. There are talks about a second season. The big buzz around the show got to here (articles and entertainment news) and now an israeli cable network baught it – I could watch it at the ease of my living room :D

  2. Well Gilad,

then you are a lucky person. I’m from Belgium and it isn’t being aired here. However, that doesn’t hold me back from watching it anyway, although I’m sure the sound quality and visuals would have been a lot better if I could have watched it on my HD TV at home.

That being said, I was very thrilled about this series. Not because I’m a comic book geek (Belgium has its own version of comic books and those are popular over here, rather than the American variety) but because I’m a big Bear McCreary fan and he’s scoring this series.

As I’m no big zombie lover (I have nothing against zombie movies, mind you, I’m just not a fan either) I could take a look at this series with a clear view, and I liked what I saw. I loved the realistic approach (which I also liked about BSG), I loved the way you could practically feel what the characters were going through and how the humanity in the zombies was maintained (to an extend).

I loved the musical approach (for me yet another side of McCreary’s work is shown to us). I loved how there was no the easily recognizable scary music alerting us of the immanent zombie. I found the absence of music in part of the episode refreshing on the one hand and completely creeping me out on the other hand. I was scared for entire sections instead of only during musically cued moments. and the gentleness of the music during the scene where Morgan tries to shoot his wife, while Rick does his mercy killing of the legless zombie in the park was breathtaking.

But enough about the music (for that kind of ranting please check out Bear’s blog ;-) ). I for one am looking forward to the second part of this series, which will hopefully attract as many viewers as the first part, hence making sure a second season is gonna be greenlit ASAP.

Looking forward to the next episode (and M&N review of the whole thing),

  3. I watched the second episode as well. Quality remains high, but I liked the pilot better (personally). That doesn’t make me any less curious about the third episode though.

I am missing weekly reviews about this. I’m sooooo curious about M&N’s opinions about this.

  4. So i am not a zombie fan at all, but as i gave the show a shot i actually really enjoyed it, and i didn’t think i would. It holds the perfect balance between a horror-type tv show and a show really focusing on humans and relationships. Although this is a fairly fast-paced tv show, it’s always interesting to be able to see that they have time, in the middle of this crazy apocalypse to show what the characters are really about.

I still have ALOT of questions still-i haven’t read the comics so i dont know if theres actually an answer for this, but how did the appocolypse start? how long was the main character in the hospital asleep while the apocalypse took place? will they show how a human transforms into a zombie/the amount of time it takes? how did the government react? i also wondered what happened to all the celebrities but i doubt that even matters..

I hope they let us know as the series goes on, and i hope they keep explaining the past of these characters, before they keep killing them off..

Anyways im really excited for the season to wrap up and i don’t think ill be able to wait a bunch of months till the second season. This is a high quality well made movie-like tv show and it’s one of the best i’ve seen so far. Its gathered more than 5 million viewers on the pilot which is more than mad men which is still pretty popular, and 5 times more viewers than caprica..

Can’t wait for the whole review & to hear all your analyzing :D

  5. Is it just me, or are most all of the characters 1-dimensional? Only the cops show good/bad sides, everyone else goes like this:

White people: Racist, selfish, crazy, abusive, etc.
Black/Hispanic/Asian: Poor misunderstood souls tormented not only by whitey, but by zombies as well.

  6. Hi guys,

I’m awainting your review on Season 1 in its entirety and I completely agree with Josh here above. Would you please, pretty please, do episode reviews from season 2 onwards?
